Jose Siri Lands on Injured List

0 3

The Mets announced after Monday night’s win against the Twins that Jose Siri is heading to the injured list with a fractured tibia. The 29-year-old outfielder fouled a ball off his leg during an at-bat in Saturday’s game against the Athletics and immediately left the game.

Siri began the year just 1-for-20 at the plate but provides excellent defense in center field and great speed on the bases. Tyrone Taylor will likely garner the lion’s share of playing time in center. The two shared reps there in the first few weeks of the year. The outfielder will undergo further testing to determine how long Siri will be out, but manager Carlos Mendoza notes it will be “a while.”

The Mets haven’t made a roster move yet to accommodate Siri, but it’ll be interesting to see how David Stearns and company manage the roster with the imminent returns of Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez. Billy McKinney or José Azocar seem the likeliest to take Siri’s spot, as Rafael Ortega is on the injured list. The Mets could also bypass them and call up top prospect Drew Gilbert, but that seems extremely unlikely.
