The South Side farm system bounced back on Sunday to win three of four

The White Sox minor league system fared much better than Saturday, winning three out of four games — the only loss coming from the Charlotte Knights.

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 4, Charlotte Knights 3 (Gameday box) (Statcast box)
This series against the Jumbo Shrimp has been a doozy, and the Knights dropped their sixth in a row to get swept by Jacksonville and fall to 6-9 on the season. The Knights took an early 2-0 lead from RBI singles Dominic Fletcher and Edgar Quero to provide righthander Owen White with a little bit of run support. White was making his third start of the year and though he struggled with walks (four compared to two Ks), he went for five scoreless innings and gave up just two hits.

The two-run lead was left in the bullpen’s hands, and unfortunately Eric Adler walked the leadoff batter then gave up four hits and three runs to blow the save on a walk-off single. The only (slight) bright side of the brutal 4-3 walk-off loss was that Colson Montgomery looked a lot better at the plate today, going 2-for-4 with a solo bomb in the top of the eighth.

Birmingham Barons 14, Chattanooga Lookouts 2 (Gameday box) (Statcast box)
It was a slugfest in Chattanooga for the Barons, who put up 18 hits in their win. The Barons went 7-for-18 with RISP, and even though they scored 14 runs, they still left nine on base as a team. William Bergolla was the hottest at the plate, going 4-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. It was Jacob Burke, however, that mashed for the most RBIs, blasting a grand slam in the top of the sixth.

The offense was everywhere, as Wilfred Veras also had a home run, and Rikuu Nishida hit his first triple of the season. Every Birmingham batter got a hit today, and six of nine batters had a multi-hit game.

All of the run support helped Riley Gowens earn his second win of the season. He went for five innings and gave up two runs off of six hits, while walking one and striking out four. The bullpen was also lights-out for the rest of the game, with Jake Palisch, Caleb Freeman, and Jarold Rosado tossing four no-hit innings accompanied by one walk and four strikeouts.

Winston-Salem Dash 10, Greensboro Grasshoppers 4 (Gameday box) (Statcast box)
A seven-run first inning set the Dash off to a hot start, with the Grasshoppers not getting an out until the eighth batter of the order when Samuel Zavala drove in the fifth run of the game on a sacrifice fly. Winston-Salem batted all the way around the order to the four-hitter, Jackson Appel, who finally ended the inning on a ground out to third. Sam Antonacci, Ryan Galanie, and Caden Connor drove in three runs apiece — Galanie accounting for the only extra-base hit of the day.

Jake Bockenstedt had the start for the Dash and was set up for success with the seven-run cushion. Bockenstedt went for five innings with only one run given up — a solo homer in the third. Mark McLaughlin and Tommy Vail were great out of the bullpen, with neither giving up a hit. Greensboro snagged three back and finally got on the board in the eighth and ninth — scoring two off of Joseph Yabbour and one off of Phil Fox — but they still fell six runs short.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 8, Lynchburg Hillcats 7 (Gameday box) (Statcast box)
The Cannon Ballers finished the weekend out strong, snagging the series win after their 8-7 victory over the Hillcats. Both teams had hot bats and seemed to be on the same wavelength Sunday — Kannapolis just barely out-hit Lynchburg, though the Hillcats left five on base compared to eight for the Ballers. Even after great offensive days in two games played on Saturday, Caleb Bonemer hit his first minor league home run and drove in half of the runs for Kannapolis (four), and Braden Montgomery posted in the second-most (two).

The pitching wasn’t as solid as the offense was, but a three-run cushion from the Ballers helped (somewhat) rescue Nick Pinto’s four-inning outing. Pinto gave up two runs on three hits, though he struck out four, he seemed to struggle with control as he also walked three batters.

Manuel Veloz came in for two efficient relief innings where he struck out one and only allowed two hits — also earning the win, his second of the year. The rest of the bullpen was quite shaky, to say the least. They allowed five runs to bring Lynchburg within one, but Jack Young was able to close out the final two outs of the ninth to earn the save.
