Spencer Turnbull to throw for interested teams

Spencer Turnbull, one of the main characters in the Phillies’ hot start to the season last year, is still a free agent. He is throwing for interested teams, according to a report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The Scott Boras client is looking to sign a major league deal.

Turnbull, 32, pitched to a 2.65 ERA in 17 games with the Phillies in 2024. He opened the year in the rotation as Taijuan Walker’s replacement. In five starts, Turnbull had a 1.67 ERA. He moved to the bullpen in early May when Walker was ready to begin his season. It took some time for him to adjust to his new role as a long reliever, but once he did, it was time to re-enter the rotation. He made one start on June 26 in Detroit before suffering a right lat strain that ultimately ended his season.

With starting pitching in short supply, there should be some interest in Turnbull. He’ll have to prove to teams that he is healthy. Even if he can’t make it through an entire season, it’s a worthwhile investment if he can replicate the stretch he was on for the Phillies in April of 2024.

The Phillies pretty much closed the door on re-signing Turnbull when they inked Joe Ross to a one-year deal. Turnbull would likely prefer an opportunity to start, and the Phillies do not have any open spots in the rotation. Ranger Suárez (back) threw three innings with the Clearwater Threshers in his first rehab appearance on Thursday. Taijuan Walker has not allowed an earned run in two starts.
