Mariners Game #11 Preview: 4/7/25, HOU at SEA
The new-look Astros face the old-look Mariners
After a blessedly brief three-game dud of a series in San Francisco, the Mariners are right back home to start a two-series homestand against their AL West rivals, the Astros and the Rangers. The new-look Astros are up first, although we have to wait until tomorrow to see Jose Altuve, Left Fielder.
Today’s Lineups:
The Astros will be starting Hayden Wesneski, an Astros pitching project who was a reliever with the Cubs but has transitioned back into the starting rotation with Houston. The Astros have seemingly adjusted Wesneski’s pitch mix, increasing his use of changeups this spring, and given the Mariners’ poor performance on that pitch in particular, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of them tonight.
News:
There is a lot of news, and it is bad. Catch up here and here.
The Astros have their own bad news: pitcher Spencer Arrighetti has a broken thumb, suffered in a freak accent during batting practice today when he was struck by a ball in the hand while warming up in the outfield.
Captain’s Log:
Dan Wilson on what he’s seen from Julio Rodríguez so far:
“I think we saw in spring, and we’re seeing early on here, his ability to use the whole field. That’s a huge step in the right direction for Julio. I think he feels really good at the plate, he’s driving the ball both to right field and to left field, and that’s really good to see. That’s a great sign to see as we start moving forward, just keep him rolling.”

Today in Mariners History:
- 1984 - Mark Langston makes his Major League debut for the Mariners. In time-honored Mariners tradition, he gives up just two runs—one on a solo homer—over seven innings, and the Mariners create just enough offense for a 3-2 win over the Brewers.
- 1999 - Freddy García makes his Major League debut for the Mariners, strikes out five and allows only two runs in his Major League debut. He gets a little more help from his offense than Langston, as Ken Griffey Jr. goes four-for-four with a home run as the Mariners take down the White Sox, 7-3.
- 2000 - Cammy robs Jeter:
