Vladimir Guererro Jr., Blue Jays Agree to 14-year, $500 Million Deal

0 23

After rumors of a potential extension, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported the Blue Jays and superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. agreed to a 14-year, $500 million contract extension. The deal includes no deferralsgiving him the second-highest guaranteed contract for a player in MLB. Juan Soto‘s contract with the Mets is still the highest. Shohei Ohtani‘s contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers notoriously contains massive deferrals.

Since debuting with the Blue Jays in 2019, Guerrero has a career .287/.362/.498/.860 line and has clubbed 160 home runs and 511 RBIs across 829 games. The power hitter is a four-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger recipient, Gold Glove Award winner, and has finished with AL MVP votes three times in his career, placing second in 2021.

Guerrero would have been the premiere player on the free agent market in the offseason and the top first baseman. His new extension makes Pete Alonso‘s future all the more interesting. Alonso has an opt-out after the 2025 season; off to a torrid start in 2025, the Polar Bear will likely seek more money and a larger contract if he can continue this pace. The question remains if that will be with the Mets or with Guerrero off the board now, with another team.

Over this past offseason, as Alonso’s free agency was ongoing, reports surfaced of the Mets’ interest in Guerrero. A few days after the Alonso deal was finalized, Mets owner Steve Cohen said of Guerrero:

“You can’t have too many long-term contracts…but I’ll let my baseball people make that decision.”
