Mets Minors Recap: Wenninger Tosses Gem for Binghamton in Opener
Three Mets affiliates got their seasons under way Friday night with mixed results. Double-A Binghamton notched a 3-1 victory over New Hampshire and Single-A Brooklyn beat Wilmington 8-4, but Low-A St. Lucie was shut out by Jupiter, 4-0. Triple-A Syracuse, which has been playing for a week, dropped to 2-4 with a 12-4 loss to Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

Diego Castillo is a 27-year-old shortstop who hit 11 homers for the Pirates in 2022, but played in only five major league games over the last two seasons combined for the Diamondbacks and Twins. He homered and made a throwing error. It was a rough night for Syracuse pitching, with four hurlers giving up two earned runs apiece.

Nick Lorusso opened the scoring with a two-run double in the fourth inning, and Alex Ramírez doubled home another run in the sixth. The Rumble Ponies stole three bases. Jett Williams went 1-for-4 with a single.

Jack Wenninger (1-0) struck out seven in five scoreless innings while throwing 50 of 76 pitches for strikes. The 23-year-old who pitched to a 3.12 ERA in 43 1/3 innings at Single-A Brooklyn last season allowed two hits and two walks. Trey McLoughlin got five outs, struck out three and threw 13 of 18 pitches for strikes. TJ Shook earned a save.

Carson Benge, the Mets’ first-round pick in last June’s draft, reached base four times and scored twice. He slashed .273/.420/.436 in 69 plate appearances for St. Lucie last year after getting selected out of Oklahoma State. Suero, who homered, hit nine out combined for St. Lucie and Brooklyn a year ago.

Noah Hall, a seventh-round pick in 2023 out of the University of South Carolina who only pitched 13 innings last season, turned in a solid start. Dakota Hawkins, who pitched to a 4.47 ERA in 92 2/3 innings last season, struggled in relief and coughed up a two-run homer.
Low-A

St. Lucie was shut out on six hits, with the only extra-base hit a double by Trace Willhoite. The Mets went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Nate Dohm made his pro debut after being selected in the third round of last year’s draft out of Mississippi State. He threw 35 of 56 pitches for strikes, but didn’t escape the fourth inning. Irving Cota gave up one hit and an unearned run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
