David Peterson Steady in Mets’ Blowout Victory

0 6

During the Mets’ 10-4 victory over the Miami Marlins, pitcher David Peterson made his first regular-season start, and he thrived.

After only allowing one home run during the first inning of all of his outings last season (21), Peterson allowed a longball in the bottom of the first inning on Monday during his 2025 regular season debut to infielder Otto López to give the infielder his first home run of the 2025 season.

But despite allowing home runs to López in the first inning and Eric Wagaman in the sixth, Peterson dominated on the mound for the Mets. The southpaw finished his 2025 debut allowing two runs in six innings, surrendering five hits and three walks while striking out nine.

“I thought it was a great team win, good to get out there and get to pitch limits, and get six [innings],” Peterson told reporters following Monday’s win. “Solid day.”

Peterson faced 25 batters while forcing 11 whiffs with a 64% strike rate while throwing 89 total pitches. His slider in particular generated more than half of those whiffs, with seven swings at the slider generating six whiffs.

The 29-year-old is coming off a strong spring. He appeared in four games (three starts) for the Mets, posting a 2-1 record with a highly impressive 0.57 ERA.

Across his five-year career with the Mets, Peterson has been inconsistent, posting a 28-24 overall record with a 4.08 ERA. However, he looks to ride the momentum from his impressive 2024 season, where the Oregon product logged a 2.90 ERA and a 10-3 record throughout 121 innings pitched.

With injuries sidelining Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea to start the season, Peterson has a prime opportunity to establish himself as a key piece in the Mets’ rotation and make a significant impact throughout the 2025 season. He’s seemed to have flip-flopped good and bad seasons over his career, and consistency is the word most commonly associated with what Peterson needs to strive toward.
