Tyler Phillips heading to division rival after DFA
Tyler Phillips was one of the casualties of the roster crunch every team faces late in the spring, and it’ll spell the end of his Phillies tenure: The Phillies have traded him to the Miami Marlins for cash considerations, the club announced Wednesday.
FanSided’s Robert Murray first reported that he was headed to Miami in some fashion. Phillips was designated for assignment when the club claimed Carlos Hernández on Sunday, giving them seven days to trade him or place him on waivers.
Phillips provided some fun feel-good moments for the Phillies last July, capping a two-start, 15-inning scoreless streak with a shutout of the Cleveland Guardians in his fourth MLB appearance.
But that was his peak with the team he grew up rooting for, as Phillips allowed 17 runs across his next three starts (just 11 innings). He went back down to Triple-A, then came up again in early September and allowed six runs without making it out of the first. The club kept Taijuan Walker over him and sent Phillips down to Triple-A for good.
He was battling for a bullpen spot this spring and didn’t pitch well overall but ended camp with a few decent outings out of the bullpen. He figured to be a flyer candidate for a rebuilding team after his DFA. Miami will be that team. We’ll see whether and when he meets his hometown team again, this time as an opponent.
