With just 10 days left until Opening Day, the New York Mets can ill afford to lose more players to injuries. Starting pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas are out. Everyday players Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez will also begin the season on the injured list. In one of Monday’s split-squad games, they may have lost one piece of their designated hitter, Jesse Winker.
On a 3-0 count in the bottom of the first inning, Winker popped out and proceeded to stumble out of the batter’s box. He would limp to first base. Winker seemed to be favoring his right knee or calf while running to first. Winker went to the dugout, and the training staff immediately checked on him. In between innings, Winker departed the game and into the clubhouse. He started the game as the designated hitter. Ryan Clifford replaced him.
If Winker has to miss time, that is a blow to New York’s outfield and designated hitter options. Starling Marte would probably be the designated hitter more against right-handed pitchers if Winker is out. However, Marte has a well-documented injury history. Brandon Nimmo, the starting left fielder, is dealing with knee soreness. If Winker is out, New York’s depth at outfield will be tested, along with their infield, catcher, and starting pitching.
