The Royals scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Padres 6-5 in the rain on Thursday afternoon.

Daniel Lynch IV is engaged in a competition for a starting role this spring and has impressed in his outings so far. He had a quick 1-2-3 first inning, but rain into trouble in the second, giving up three hits, including a two-run triple to Luis Arraez. The Padres put up three runs overall to take a 3-0 lead.

Michael Massey continued his hot hitting with a leadoff triple in the second off Yu Darvish, later scoring on an RBI groundout by Kyle Isbel. The Royals went quietly until the sixth when they faced reliever Stephen Kolek. Jonathan India led off with a double and came home on an RBI single by MJ Melendez to make it 3-2 Padres.

Lynch would exit after four innings having given up the three runs, but he had no walks and two strikeouts. Hunter Harvey and Lucas Erceg each pitched scoreless frames and John Schrieber worked around two hits to keep the Padres off the board.

Carlos Hernández did not help his bid to make the team, giving up a home run to Mason McCoy.

He also walked two hitters, one of them eventually coming around to score on an RBI single by Trenton Brooks to make it 5-2 Padres.

That set up a dramatic ninth for the Royals. Former Royals pitcher Jason Adam gave up a leadoff double to Luke Maile, then hit Dustin Dickerson with a pitch. Joey Wiemer launched a three-run home run to tie things up, his second home run of the spring. Jack Pineda followed that up with a double. Nik Goodrum would commit an error on a ball hit by Austin Charles to allow Pineda to score for a walk-off Royals win.

The Royals will take on the Angels tomorrow afternoon with prospects taking on the Diamondbacks that night in the Spring Breakout Game.
