Morning Briefing: Carlos Mendoza Provides Updates on Nimmo, Senga
Good morning, Mets fans!
Carlos Mendoza spoke with the media Saturday to discuss some Mets topics.
On Brandon Nimmo: The outfielder received a “gel injection” to help with his sore right knee. “No activities for 48-72 hours and then we’ll ramp him back up again,” Mendoza said. He’ll be shut down for a couple of days, but the hope is that he’ll still be ready for Opening Day.
On Juan Soto immediately fitting in with the rest of the team: “For me, I didn’t think it was going to be this quick. He fit right in… Within a couple of days you see him laughing, making jokes especially with some of the Latin players… Seems like he’s been here a while and it’s only been three weeks or so.” Saturday’s starter, David Peterson agreed. “It does feel like he’s been here a while… He’s been awesome to have around in the clubhouse,” Peterson remarked.
Kodai Senga will be starting in a minor-league scrimmage today, says Mendoza. The righty looked decent in his last start, tossing two scoreless innings on 31 pitches (20 strikes).

Latest MLB News
Gerrit Cole is “concerned” about his right elbow: “In [Thursday’s] game there was a lot of good stuff happening…but as I got home I just continued to get more and more sore. Something wasn’t right.” More updates on Cole’s status will come in the upcoming days.
In addition to Cole, the Yankees are dealing with even more injury setbacks. Giancarlo Stanton has revealed that his elbow injuries are “severe in both elbows” and is unsure when he’ll be able to resume baseball activities. If surgery is required, his season could be over.
José Urquidy is officially a Detroit Tiger. as Detroit has already confirmed the deal. He will earn $1 million in 2025 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, and the Tigers hold a $4 million club option for 2026. The move presents an interesting low-risk investment for Detroit — one that could pay dividends if Urquidy returns to form. Urquidy, 29, has 405 major league innings under his belt. His 104 ERA+ suggests solid but unspectacular performance.
Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar was removed from Saturday’s game with a jammed left finger. Initial X-rays came back negative, according to the Braves, and he’ll undergo further testing soon.
