Elephant Rumblings: MLB Pipeline releases their A’s Top-30 Prospects List
MLB news roundup
Happy Thursday A’s fans!
MLB Pipeline released their long-anticipated A’s Top 30 Prospects list today. If you are a regular reader of Athletics Nation then you know we are doing our own Community Prospect rankings, so finally getting Pipeline’s updated rankings will be interesting to see compared to what A’s fans have been voting for.
There is no change at the very tippy top of the rankings between the two. Both Pipeline and A’s have pegged shortstop prospect Jacob Wilson as the top prospect in the farm system. It’s a well-deserved spot for the young infielder who is set for his first full MLB season. As things stand right now the club is planning to play him everyday. He should eventually be an option near the top of the lineup, theoretically behind leader man Lawrence Butler.
Then you have first baseman Nick Kurtz sliding in the number two spot for both rankings. The lefty slugger only played in 13 games after getting drafted just last year, but he already made it to the Double-A level and should progress quickly through the minor league system.
From there however the two prospect rankings begin to differ. While A’s fans had ranked RHP Luis Morales as the third-best prospect in the system, Pipeline gave that spot to outfielder Colby Thomas. For them, Morales is the fifth-best prospect in the system, and second-best pitcher behind RHP Mason Barnett. Barnett, you may remember, was only just acquired at the deadline last season for setup man Lucas Erceg. Pipeline thinks very highly of one of the organization’s newest additions.
Most of the top-10 was the same regardless of where they ranked. The only player that A’s fans left out on their list was third baseman Tommy White, who Pipeline clocked in at #7. For A’s fans, White fell just outside the top-10, placing 11th among prospects. Instead they gave right-handed pitcher Steven Echavarria the nod, looking highly upon a pitcher with just one year at Single-A under his belt.
So where do you think Pipeline missed on? Did A’s fans overrate or underrate any players for their own prospect list? Discuss below! And again, have an excellent Thursday everyone.

Love some hot takes from Dallas:
“Grip it & rip it”… There’s more to it than that as Mason explains. Find the grip you’re comfortable with, understand WHY it moves (or doesn’t move) & build on that. Finding different ways to execute & refining your skills is imperative for long term survival on the mound. https://t.co/bLTsRw0qrP
