Mets Lead in Spending for Third Straight Season

0 6

The Mets set a new MLB record in 2024 with a $333.3 million regular payroll. That number, which is according to the league and was obtained by The Associated Press, marks the third staight year the team led the bigs in player spending.

New York in fact totaled $430.4 million last year when you include the $97.1 million spent as part of the luxury tax. The Mets luxury tax payment of $97 million is more than the Rays ($90M, Pirates ($87M) and A’s ($66M) spent on their entire payrolls for the 2024 season.

The team spent big in 2021, Cohen’s first year at the helm, but it wasn’t until the following season that they overtook the top spot. That was when the team broke the AAV record to sign Max Scherzer and build a hand of pocket aces with Jacob deGrom. That was also the year Francisco Lindor‘s record-breaking 10-year $341 million contract came into effect.

This offseason, Cohen landed a big fish when he signed superstar Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million deal. In that sense, Steve Cohen has been the owner that Mets fans thought they were getting when he finalized the deal to purchase the team in November 2020.

In those three seasons, the Mets went a total of 265-221, made the postseason twice as a Wild Card and earned their first trip to the NLCS in nine seasons.

At this point of the 2025 season, the Mets sit only behind the Dodgers in payroll.
