Overview
The Mets selected Trey Snyder in the fifth round of the 2024 MLB Draft and signed him for $1,322,500, paying him nearly $900,00 over slot value ($476,200) for the No. 144 overall pick. Snyder, a prep shortstop out of Missouri has a lot of tools and while he will take some time to develop, he offers offensive upside and the potential to stay at shortstop.
Snyder hit .391 with seven home runs in his senior season of high school, also showing his speed with 22 stolen bases. What Snyder brings to the plate is a potential five-tool player at a premium position. He has above-average bat speed and running speed, with fluid motions in the field which bode well for his impact on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he has a line-drive swing that currently makes him more of a doubles-power type of player.
Snyder currently profiles as a shortstop thanks to his smooth movement, good reactions, and strong arm. However, as he continues to grow he may become too big to play the position. Snyder is one of the highest-upside players in the Mets system but is raw, as to be expected from a high school draftee.
2025 Outlook
Snyder will likely repeat in the Florida Coast League in Rookie Ball for the Mets, playing the entire season as a 19-year-old. Snyder has already shown some recognition of the strike zone and he will look to improve his approach while making quality contact and getting the seasoning he needs. However, it would not be much of a surprise to see him in Low-A to end the season based on his defensive pedigree.
