Texas baseball's home opener vs. Houston canceled due to weather

0 6

AUSTIN (KXAN) — With steady afternoon showers and an arctic cold front on the way, the No. 16 Texas Longhorns won't open play at UFCU Disch-Falk Field against Houston on Tuesday.

The game was originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m., then moved up an hour to 5:30 p.m. in hopes of beating the rain and plummeting temperatures. Mother Nature had other plans, however, and rain stuck around the Austin area for most of the afternoon. With the cold front creeping in and creating potential wind gusts of 40 miles per hour, conditions weren't going to improve.

Texas (2-1) will now open its home schedule on Friday against Dartmouth to kick off a 3-game series. While temperatures are still forecast to be chilly in the upper 30s, KXAN's First Warning Weather team has rain chances at 20%.

The Longhorns dropped their season opener 4-3 in 10 innings Feb. 14 to Louisville at the Shriners Children's College Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, but bounced back to win the tournament. They beat Ole Miss 10-0 in a mercy rule-shortened game, and then topped former Big 12 foe No. 19 Oklahoma State 14-8.

The Texas softball team's game against Akron on Wednesday is also canceled due to weather.
