Morning Briefing: Yankees Ink Carlos Carrasco

Good morning, Mets fans!

The Yankees have agreed to a minor league contract with former Mets hurler Carlos Carrasco. The 37-year-old spent 2024 with the Guardians and endured his second straight rough season, posting a 5.64 ERA and allowing 19 homers in 103 innings across 21 starts. Carrasco last posted an ERA+ above 100 over a full season in 2018.

Buster Olney of ESPN reported Monday that the Tigers are one of the teams still pursuing Alex Bregman. Detroit inked Jack Flaherty to bolster their rotation Sunday night. Bregman reportedly has multiple six-year offers, though it was reportedly earlier in January that Detroit’s negotiations with the 30-year-old were at a standstill.

Major League Baseball has fired umpire Pat Hoberg for sharing betting accounts with a friend who bet on baseball. While the league found no evidence that Hoberg bet on games himself, he deleted key messages that were needed for the investigation. Hoberg can apply for reinstatement in 2026.

Former Orioles infielder Rich Dauer passed away Monday at the age of 72. Dauer spent all 10 years of his playing career in Baltimore, winning a World Series ring in 1983 and was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2012. He also won a World Series as the Astros’ first base coach in 2017.

The Rays have acquired right-hander Alex Faedo from the Tigers in exchange for minor-league catcher Enderson Delgado. Faedo was designated for assignment to clear room for Tommy Kahnle. A former first-round pick out of the University of Florida, Faedo posted a 3.61 ERA with 55 strikeouts against 28 walks in 57 1/3 innings. Delgado split 2024 between Rookie Ball and High-A, posting a .782 OPS in 269 plate appearances.

The Brewers have re-signed former Mets reliever Tyler Jay to a minor league contract. Jay allowed four runs in 7 2/3 innings between New York and Milwaukee in 2024. The Brewers designated him for assignment in January and he was claimed by the Mariners, but he was designated for assignment once again last week.

The Rangers have signed former Mets outfielder Sam Haggerty to a minor league contract. Haggerty had two effective seasons for the Mariners in 2022 and 2023 but went just 1-for-15 in the majors in 2024. He also suffered a torn Achilles in May when he collided with an outfielder fence.

Long Island native Stephen Ridings has signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers. Ridings appeared in 14 minor league games in the Mets organization in 2023 but missed time due to a lat strain. The 29-year-old spent 2024 with the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League, posting a 3.06 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings.

MLB has revealed the rosters for the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Taiwan. Spain, South Africa, Chinese Taipei, and Nicaragua will compete for two spots in the 2026 tournament.
