Morning Briefing: Mets Still Interested in Tim Hill

Good morning, Mets fans!

Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated reported Monday that the Mets are among the teams still in on left-hander Tim Hill. Ragazzo said the Yankees, Diamondbacks, Angels, Dodgers and Rockies are also in the mix for the sidearming lefty. The Mets were linked to Hill earlier in January, but they’ve since signed A.J. Minter.

Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reported Monday that the Mets are no longer involved in discussions with free agent third baseman Alex Bregman. The Blue Jays, Cubs, Red Sox, Tigers, and Astros remain in the mix for the 30-year-old.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Padres have discussed trading starting pitchers Dylan Cease and Michael King. Both pitchers are set to hit free agency following the season. Cease is owed $13 million in 2025, while King is likely headed for an arbitration hearing.

Former Mets backstop Wilson Ramos has announced his retirement from baseball. Ramos played in 49 games for Bravos de Margarita in the Venezuelan Winter League this offseason. A two-time All-Star, Ramos had a 26-game hitting streak with the Mets in the summer of 2019 and won a Silver Slugger with Washington in 2016.

Junior Caminero crushed a tiebreaking home run in the top of the ninth inning, and Rafael Montero dodged traffic thanks to a game-ending sliding catch to secure the LIDOM championship for Leones del Escogido, denying Tigres del Licey of a three-peat. Luis Rojas earns a ring as the team’s general manager and Albert Pujols brings home a title as a rookie skipper.

The Orioles have brought on five-time All-Star Adam Jones as a special advisor and a community ambassador. Jones, who played 11 seasons in Baltimore, will be heavily involved in the adopt-a-school partnership, Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) and the Challenger Baseball League.

In more Orioles news, the team has signed outfielder Dylan Carlson to a one-year contract. The former Gold Glover batted .209/.287/.277 with just three homers in 265 plate appearances with the Cardinals and Rays in 2024.

The Rangers have signed right-hander Jesse Chavez to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training. The 41-year-old spent 2024 with the Braves, posting a 3.13 ERA with 55 strikeouts against 19 walks in 63 1/3 innings.
