A superutilityman on the level of Danny Mendick or Zach Remillard? This free agent signing could turn out to be more than that

We can talk all night about how a 25-year-old who made his major league debut in 2023 is no longer a prospect, but hey, No. 54 was a 25-year-old who’s never gotten past Double-A, so let’s pipe down and learn about this slick minor league free agent signing (made official on January 6, although the White Sox pounced a month earlier to lock him in).

Think about it: At any age, a White Sox system player clubbing 25 long balls anywhere, much less in Triple-A, would easily cross into our Top 50, so hungry we are for good prospect news. Why can’t we ride a wave of found fortune?

Lipcius is not being spoken of at ALL as a major league possibility in 2025, and that’s a bit silly. Sure, he’s straddling the line of organizational filler and true prospect, but hey, even Mark Payton saw a little South Side shine in 2022 — and Lipcius’ 2024 was every bit Paytonesque. If Andre duplicates his 2024 in the hitting-friendly confines in Charlotte, there’s almost no chance he doesn’t pull a Zach Remillard/Danny Medick/Payton/et. al and gets some scratch for the Sox.

The Remillardian/Mendickian utilityman saw most of his time at first base in 2024 while laboring for L.A.’s Triple-A club in Oklahoma City, but also got 30 combined games in at second and third base. And in what may seem a shocking affront to White Sox fans now used to noodle bats, Lipcius HITS: Over five MiLB campaigns, his slash is .267/.356/.422 with 63 homers and an average season of 60 RBIs.

Yes, Lipcius could see the South Side this season. No, it wouldn’t be the best endorsement of the White Sox system if he breaks camp in Charlotte but still sees Chicago before the likes of Colson Montgomery, Bryan Ramos or even Wilfred Veras. But there is plenty to like about this versatile pickup; he might actually contribute to some wins admist the perpetual rebuild.
