News and Notes for Monday, January 20th, 2025

Shockingly, Tanner Scott signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers:

They apparently are allowed to have 35-man active roster because I have no idea how they are fitting all these guys on their team.

Many MLB personalities have been explaining to fans how, actually, the Dodgers are good for baseball, there is no such thing as a super team, your team's owner should just outbid the Dodgers and defer payments at the same rates, etc. Etc. And I say we should boo these people. I mean:

That's six of the top 40 free agents in case you're wondering.

Baseball's problem as I see it is at least 20 of its team's fanbases know every offseason that they have zero shot to get the top 15-20 free agents. I don't even know if signing free agents to these huge deals is a wise idea; but only MAYBE 10 teams seem to believe they have the financial flexibility to offer these lucrative, long-term contracts. Which, if nothing else, is a huge PR problem for MLB. In the NFL, every team has a chance to retain its superstars and sign big free agents. Do I want the NFL's salary cap? No, but some kind of increased revenue-sharing and salary floor seems needed... be prepared to not watch one inning of MLB in 2027, folks. That lockout is gonna be a doozy.

Terry Pluto wrote about the Guardians trades of Andres Gimenez and Josh Naylor. Sounds like Pluto expects the team to give Juan Brito a legitimate shot to make the team. I hope so.

Go Buckeyes! O-H
