Mets Claim Austin Warren

0 9

On Wednesday, the Mets claimed right-handed pitcher Austin Warren from the San Francisco Giants. Warren, 28, has had major league experience the last four years – from 2021-2023 with the Los Angeles Angels and in 2024 with the Giants, albeit in a small sample size. The Mets 40-man roster is now at 38 players.

Warren posted a 1.69 ERA last season in 10 2/3 innings, striking out seven but walking five. His MLB career has shown similar metrics, with spotty control but the potential to be a higher strikeout pitcher. He utilizes a five-pitch mix, including a four-seam fastball, sinker, cutter, changeup, and a slider, which was his most used pitch. Warren pitches from a low arm slot, which gives his slider/cutter combination positive Stuff+ ratings, but his other three options all rate below 94. Despite his 6’0″ stature, he gets good extension on all his pitches and a surprisingly high 33.3% whiff rate on his cutter. While he will not blow anyone away with his velocity, a solid five-pitch mix as a reliever is a good foundation to work from.

Warren will serve as a depth addition to a Mets bullpen that has yet to make a significant free-agent signing. Warren offers a different look out of the bullpen due to his delivery. If the Mets pitcher development can possibly refine his control while potentially helping him make his cutter more reliable, he could become a useful bullpen piece.
