2025 South Side Sox Top Prospect No. 59: Garrett Schoenle

After a dismal 2023 in Birmingham, Garrett Schoenle wreaked havoc on Southern League hitters in his return engagement in 2024. | Tiffany Wintz/South Side Sox

One of just three players back after falling out of our 100 last year, this southpaw is poised to make noise in Charlotte — and on the South Side

A highly-regarded prep out of Ohio selected as a who-knows? pick in the 30th round by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2017 MLB draft, Garrett Schoenle played four seasons at the University of Cincinnati — but unfortunately did little to help his draft stock in that time. The southpaw’s freshman year for the Bearcats was a toe-dip four games, his sophomore season a heavier load to more disastrous effect (5.95 ERA, 1.821 WHIP), 2020 was largely lost to the pandemic, and in 75 1⁄3 innings for the Bearcats as a senior Schoenle allowed 78 hits (.264 OBA) and just 24 walks (7.3%) while fanning 89 (26.9%). Unsurprisingly, he went unpicked in 2021’s reduced, 20-round draft, and signed as an undrafted free agent with the White Sox.

Used primarily as a starter in college, Schoenle was thrust into the bullpen for the ACL Sox. In 10 appearances totaling the same number of innings, Schoenle posted a 2.70 ERA and 1.40 WHIP by surrendering 11 hits (.297 OBA) and three walks (7.3%) while inducing 11 strikeouts (26.8%). Somewhat surprisingly in the small sample size, lefties hit Schoenle much better (.364) than righties (.269).

In 2022, Schoenle established himself as a Pitcher to Watch in the White Sox system, and blossomed into the best high-minors pitcher in the system you’d never heard of. He was asked to do a little bit of everything (start, relieve, close) at three levels (Kanny up to Birmingham), and did so spectacularly. He continued his relief work to begin the season at Kannapolis and even to begin his promotion in Winston-Salem. But from mid-June on for the Dash and later the Barons, Schoenle shifted seamlessly into starting.

Which makes Schoenle’s step-back in 2023 puzzling, as he in fact dropped completely out of our Top 100 due to a rough time in Birmingham. The southpaw was a true swingman (34 games, 18 starts) and took on a heavy load of 100-plus innings ... but they were not worth writing home about (6.22 ERA, 1.568 WHIP). In retrospect, however, we were far too tough on Garrett, because holy hell did he set things right in 2024.

As in 2023 pitching across three levels (Winston-Salem up to Charlotte), Schoenle was brilliant. For trivia’s sake, he was part of no-hitters both in Triple-A (a spot appearance for the Knights in June) and Double-A (pairing with Jairo Iriarte in July). But trivia aside, the southpaw was impeccable, pitching to a sub-1.000 WHIP and keeping his ERA at a microscopic 1.67.

The Ratings per his peers continue to adore Schoenle, giving him above-average marks across the board and the 10th-best numbers among the first 41 players in the Top 100:

Schoenle’s Baseball Cube player ratings
Strikeouts 75 (-2 from two seasons ago)
Durability 68 (+6)
vs. Power 67 (+2)
Hittable 67 (+2)
K/BB 64 (0)
Walks 55 (+1)
Average 66.00 (+1.50)

Schoenle joins Gil Luna as the two players so far (and Adisyn Coffey, to come) to have dropped out of the Top 100 and returned this year — and jumping up to No. 59 is no token honor. He was deserving of more time than his one game (yeah, a NO-HITTER) at Charlotte, so expect him breaking camp with the Knights. And if Garrett keeps his roll going (recall, he’s had just one bad pro season of four), he could be South Side-bound this summer.
