Former Educator Leaves Lasting Impact through Endowed Scholarship
Mr. Hank Mutter, affectionally known as “Mutt”, graduated from Alice Lloyd College in 1979 with an Associate in Science. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Math/Secondary Education with minors in biology and physics from Pikeville College and a Master of Arts in art education and instructional leadership from Eastern Kentucky University. Mutt dedicated his life to educating and supporting Appalachian youth by serving the Pike County School System for 30 years where he impacted generations of mountain students.
Mutt taught math, science, and dual-credit math. Throughout his career, he was actively involved in educational organizations like PCEA and EKEA; he even served as a moderator for the local and state academic teams.
Mutt did not expect perfection from his students, rather, he expected effort. Like Mrs. Alice Lloyd, Mutt witnessed the potential of mountain students. He helped them transform their lives through his teaching and by demonstrating the opportunity of education. Mutt gladly tutored anyone who needed his wisdom, and he always made students laugh when they were feeling blue.
Alice Lloyd College played an important role in Mutt’s life. His time in Pippa Passes helped him find his purpose in educating Appalachian youth and taught him values that served him throughout his lifetime. Mutt loved his time at the College and often shared wonderful memories from his walk along Purpose Road. He believed that ALC made it possible for students of all backgrounds to receive a higher education, and he always encouraged students to strive towards furthering their education.
Though Mutt has left us for a heavenly home, he left his legacy and wisdom in the hearts and minds of generations of mountain people. Countless students have shared how much he meant to them and how his guidance helped them become servant leaders. His former student and current ARPN, Meranda Ramey, said, “Mr. Mutter and teachers like him are the reason struggling children have been blessed to become professionals who can give back to their communities.” Another student and current pharmacist, Justin Sanson, echoed her sentiment, saying, “The things I learned from him really helped make me into the man I am today.”
ALC shares Mr. Mutter’s devotion to mountain students and is honored to help his family establish the Hank Mutter Memorial Endowed Scholarship to continue his legacy in education. He was a wonderful friend to the College, a humble servant of Mrs. Lloyd’s mission, and a heartwarming example of a light unto the mountains.
