WBSC Premier12 2024 presented by RAXUS Group B Day 6 - Korea beat Australia; Japan v Dominican Republic; Cuba v Chinese Taipei
Welcome to the sixth and final day of Group B action of the WBSC Premier12 2024 presented by RAXUS in Taipei.
After Japan and Chinese Taipei confirmed their Super Round spots on Sunday, there are three games on Monday to close out the Opening Round before the Super Round takes place in Tokyo, Japan from November 21-24.
The first game of the day saw world No. 6 Korea beat No. 15 Australia 5-2 at Taipei Tianmu Baseball Stadium, where conditions were wet with light drizzle falling.
The win moves Korea to 3-2 while Australia finishes the tournament at 1-4.
Meanwhile, world No. 1 Japan will finish the Opening Round of the WBSC Premier12 2024 presented by RAXUS facing No. 12 Dominican Republic. Japan, the only undefeated team, will finish first in any case. The Dominicans would improve to 2-3 and could hope in a three-way tie for third place.
Japan chose right-hander Shosei Togo as their starter. The 24-year-old contributed to the title of Baseball World Champions Japan earned winning the 2023 World Baseball Classic and has pitched a no-hitter during the 2024 Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) season. He posted a 12-8 record for the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants.
The Dominican Republic will hand the ball to Wili Peralta, making his second start of the Premier12 2024. The Major League Baseball (MLB) veteran, over 250 games, 139 as a starter, pitched 5.1 innings against Cuba, ending with a no-decision.
The last game of the day at 6.30pm local time at the Taipei Dome sees the No. 2 programme in the WBSC/KONAMI Men’s Baseball World Ranking, Chinese Taipei, square off with No. 9 Cuba to conclude the Opening Round of the WBSC Premier12 2024 presented by RAXUS.
After their dominant 11-3 win over Australia on Sunday, Chinese Taipei qualified for the Super Round at the WBSC Premier12 2024 thanks to a 3-1 record and owning the tie-breaker over Korea (thanks to their 6-3 win in the first game of the event) in case both national teams would be 3-2 in the standings. Chinese Taipei also had beaten the Dominican Republic (2-1) and lost to Japan (1-3).
The record title holder in Baseball World Cups, Cuba, meanwhile were eliminated from contention on Sunday with a 7-6 loss to Japan. It was an exciting battle between two baseball powerhouses at Tienmu Stadium. Cuba dropped to 1-3 in the standings with their lone win being a 4-3 victory over Australia on Saturday. Previously they had lost 1-6 to the Dominican Republic and 4-8 to Korea.
Cuba is sending 35-year-old veteran left-hander Yoennis Yera to the mound as starting pitcher. Pitching in his third WBSC Premier12 in his career he already drew the start against the Dominican Republic, allowing just three hits in six scoreless innings, striking out five. During the 2024 season playing for Tabasco in the Mexican League he went 1-4 with an ERA of 4.82 in 15 games (12 starts). He struck out 60 in 61.2 innings pitched, walking 23.
Chinese Taipei announced Tzu-Peng Huang as starting pitcher. The 30-year-old right-hander was stellar in his start against the Dominican Republic, where he issued just one walk in six scoreless no-hit frames. A minor injury forced him out of the no-hit bid. During the 2024 season he pitched for the Rakuten Monkeys in the CPBL, going 5-7 with an ERA of 3.51 in 18 games. He struck out 56 in 100 innings, walking 22.
