MLB news roundup

Happy Friday, Athletics Nation!

The A’s picked up a couple of minor leaguers this week. Yesterday, they announced the signing of former Dodgers righty Tanner Dodson.

Dodson was drafted by the Rays in Competitive Balance Round B of the 2018 Draft, then traded to the Dodgers ahead of the 2022 season. The wiry 27-year-old struggled mightily through his first two years in the Dodgers’ system, but made his way to Triple-A regardless and “improved vastly” in 2024 according to Jason Burke at SI.com. Burke’s report on Dodson’s deal provides more detail on this newest Athletic’s history and pitching attributes.

The A’s also signed former Reds infielder Alejo Lopez earlier in the week.

Awards season is currently underway, and A’s slugger Brent Rooker finally got some well-deserved recognition in winning his first Silver Slugger award this week. Rooker took a hard snubbing in this year’s All-Star selection process, so it’s great to see him take this honor over big name finalists like Yordan Alvarez and Giancarlo Stanton. Rooker slashed a spectacular .293/.365/.562 this year with a 164 wRC+.

In the later breaking news department, Mason Miller became the second Athletic to secure accolades this week in being named to the 2024 All-MLB Second Team last night.

Congratulations are in order! Miller brought the filth this season, setting a franchise record of 28 saves by a rookie reliever along the way.

Gold Glove winners were also announced yesterday. Of four former Athletics who were named finalists this year, only Giants third baseman Matt Chapman will be taking home hardware. Hopefully he has enough shelf space for this, his fifth Rawlings award. Congratulations, Chappy!

Have a wonderful weekend, AN.
