Tropicana Field roof destroyed by Hurricane Milton

Surreal drone footage shows the damage.

Hurricane Milton, the category 5 hurricane that hit the Tampa Bay region on October 9th, has destroyed the roof of Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Drone footage of the damage was captured by WxChasing, which captured the damage left by the destruction of the 30-year old roof. Inside the stadium you can see the beds which were being used by first responders during the storm.

Tropicana Field received a roof in 1993 when it was the home stadium for the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning from 1993-1996; at the time was referred to as the Thunder Dome. The Rays moved into the stadium in 1998.

Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane, which is designated for wind speeds between 111-129 mph, and the roof on Tropicana Field was built to withstand winds of 115 mph, as noted by the Tampa Bay Times from the team’s annual media guide:

“It is made of “six acres of translucent, Teflon-coated fiberglass and supports itself with 180 miles of cables connected by struts,” per the team media guide, and was “built to withstand winds of up to 115 mph.”

The city of St. Petersburg was reporting no injuries as of this morning.
