MMO Roundtable: How Will The Mets Fare In The NLDS?

0 0

The Mets did it – they’re in the NLDS! We shared our postseason predictions with you and some of us called it, some of us not so much. But all of us are PUMPED that the Mets did it and they’re on to the next round to face the Phillies. So, how do we think they’ll fare against the Phils? Here are our predictions on the series and who we think will lead the way.

On paper, I don’t see much separating the teams. Off paper, the Mets are on a magical ride that I don’t see ending soon. The Phillies played their best baseball in the first half. They are 33-33 since the All-Star break. Grimace > Phanatic

Mets in 5, Brandon Nimmo MVP
The Phillies are the superior team to the Mets, but momentum will be a factor for the Mets. Two season-defining wins and a playoff series win will propel the Mets over the Phillies, and it’ll be Brandon Nimmo who goes off for the Mets. Nimmo has shown his All-Star potential this season, and after a lackluster second-half, he’ll settle in and lead the Mets to the NLCS.

Christian De Block

Mets in 4, Pete Alonso MVP
No team has more momentum right now than the Mets. That makes them extremely dangerous, regardless of the opponent. Last year, both No. 1 seeds lost after getting an extended break. I think that trend continues, as the Mets advance on the back of a relaxed Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor.

Matt Lazzaro

Mets in 4, Pete Alonso MVP
While the Mets have had quite the hectic schedule over the last week, they’re riding high off of two of the most clutch home runs in franchise history that put them into this position. Philadelphia has had five full days between their last regular season appearance and Game 1 on Saturday, perhaps showing some rust out of the gate. The biggest home run of Alonso’s career can completely turn around his 2024 season fortunes, along with the team’s.

Mathias Altman-Kurosaki

Mets in 5, Brandon Nimmo MVP
The Phillies may have won the season series, but the Mets played them pretty tough, especially the last two series between the teams. They also showed they can hit Philadelphia’s pitching staff pretty well and they have the pitching to match Philly on the mound. Nimmo has taken both Wheeler and Nola deep this year, including the game-winning homer off Wheeler two weeks ago. The Phillies went 54-27 at home this year, but I see the Mets stealing one of the games in Philly, which will set them up well for the rest of the series.

Andrew Steele-Davis

Phillies in 5, Trea Turner MVP
It would be foolish to bet against the Mets at this point. They seem to be this year’s team of destiny. However, I’m going to risk looking like a fool by saying the magic will run out in the NLDS. The Phillies are a better team, and a team built to win the World Series now. They have multiple game-changers, as well as the firepower to out-slug the Mets. Plus, if you look at the series against the Brewers closely, you can say the Mets got lucky in a lot of ways. However, that said, I do think this team will push the Phillies all the way and have their moments but, ultimately, the magical postseason adventure will come to an end in the NLDS

Mojo Hill

Phillies in 4, Bryce Harper MVP

I think this is where the magic finally runs out, against a better Phillies team. The Mets’ starting pitching has really stepped up, but I think it comes back to Earth a bit in this series. I also just think the Mets’ offense is too inconsistent to beat the team that had the NL’s best record for much of the season. Thursday night was fun, but the Mets’ sporadic dry spells with the bats will come back to hurt them.

Allison Waxman

Phillies in 4, Alec Bohm MVP
The Mets pulled off pure sorcery in Milwaukee and they deserved every minute of it. However, their bats were asleep until the 8th inning, a common theme for this team. It’s possible the team can keep doing this, but with a Phillies team that can outhit them, it may seem too big a mountain to overcome. But, I’ve been wrong before— just look at my Wild Card predictions.
