Gamethread: White Sox at Tigers

All that’s left is the when, not if, of Loss 121

So, the White Sox can no longer even end up tying the 1916 Philadelphia A’s as the worst team since 1916. Though I do not root against the White Sox unless a domestic abuser is pitching for them (or signed, or defended, or re-signed), this feels like a bit of a letdown.

But credit due, it took 156 games, but these White Sox finally played with urgency and pride — and took on a team “almost” as horrible as themselves — in sweeping the Angels this week. The hometown fans got a thrill, when they weren’t openly and aggressively rooting for failure, and completed their second sweep all season.

Tonight, against a Detroit team still uncertain of its playoff positioning, begins a tougher task. But the White Sox are running out, even if for just four (or in the season finale, five or six?) innings, ace Garrett Crochet, so this winning streak theoretically could push to four:

The halfhearted spirit of Luis Robert Jr. will get a chance to heal, as he rides the pine tonight, undoubtedly pleasing the most grizzled of you veterans reading.

Detroit was positively dead mere weeks ago, a team 40 games ahead of the White Sox but disappointing everyone else on the planet. Yeah, they’ve turned it around some. Technically not yet a playoff team, but, c’mon, they’re playing the White Sox this weekend.

ET game, so we’re on at 5:40 p.m. CT on the usual broadcast outlets. Just three games left for NBCSCH.
