Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert Headline Mets AFL Participants

Eight players in the Mets organization, including top prospects Jett Williams and Drew Gilbert, will play in the Arizona Fall League, which begins Oct. 7, MLB announced Wednesday.

Williams and Gilbert will be joined by five right-handed pitchers – Saul Garcia, Noah Hall, Jonathan Pintaro, Jawilme Ramirez and Dylan Ross – and infielder Jacob Reimer.

Williams, a 20-year-old first round draft pick who plays shortstop and the outfield, went 8-for-22 in six games at Triple-A Syracuse after missing much of the year with a wrist injury. He slashed .215/.358/.298 across three levels in 148 plate appearances.

He appeared on MLB Network Wednesday, where he talked about his season and his experience with the Mets in spring training.

Gilbert, 23, an outfielder who also dealt with injuries, hit 10 homers in 247 plate appearances at Syracuse while slashing .215/.313/.393.

Fourteen of MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects will play in the AFL. Williams is No. 53 on the list and Gilbert is No. 76.

The Mets prospects will play for the Scottsdale Scorpions, joining minor leaguers from the Blue Jays, Giants, Pirates and Tigers. There are six AFL teams and they play a six-week schedule that ends with a championship game at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale on Nov. 16.

Stats/notes for the other Mets who will play in the AFL:

• Garcia (4-8, 5.05 ERA) 86 Ks, 71.1 innings at St. Lucie and Brooklyn.
• Hall (0-2, 9.69 ERA) 13 innings at St. Lucie and Brooklyn.
• Pintaro (3-6, 2.68 ERA) 75 Ks, 74 innings at three levels up to Syracuse.
• Ramirez (5-5, 3.58 ERA) 61 Ks, 73 innings at three levels up to Syracuse.
• Ross, 24, a 13th round pick in the 2022 draft from the University of Georgia, pitched one inning at St. Lucie this season.
• Reimer, 20, a fourth round pick in 2022, hit .196 in 46 at-bats with Brooklyn.

The Triple-A Syracuse Mets hitting coach Collin Hetzler will be on the Scorpions staff. On a fun note, Tigers pitching prospect Wilmer Flores (the younger brother of former Mets infielder Wilmer Flores) will be on the same team as his first cousin –Mets pitching prospect Saul García.
