Cup of Coffee: Coffey strikes out 10 as Portland stays alive

0 1
9/15 Cup of Coffee:
Worcester saw its playoff chances continue slipping away as the final week of the Triple-A season approaches. Portland is preparing for its final game of the regular season, and they need to win and get some help to make the playoffs.

-----

The WooSox led this game into the seventh, but Syracuse scored 17 times over the last three innings. Justin Hagenman turned in a quality start, firing six innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts. The Worcester bullpen took its lumps from there, with infielder Tyler Miller giving up four runs in the ninth. Kyle Teel reached base in all five plate appearances as he went 2 for 2 with three walks, and Mickey Gasper went 3 for 5 with a double.

With the loss, the WooSox fell to 4.5 games behind Columbus in the second-half standings.

Isaac Coffey (pictured) put an exclamation point on a strong regular season as he struck out 10 and earned the win. He did not allow a run over his 5 2/3 innings and surrendered two hits. The save went to Alex Hoppe, who cleaned up the final 3 1/3. Blaze Jordan drove in two runs as part of a 3-for-3 night with a sacrifice fly, and Mikey Romero went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Jhostynxon Garcia went 1 for 4 with his second triple with the Sea Dogs.

Somerset also won on Saturday, so Portland remains a half-game back of a playoff spot going into the season's final day.

Player of the Day: Isaac Coffey will finish the year with the most strikeouts in the Boston farm system after recording 10 more on Saturday in 5 2/3 shutout innings. He racked up 148 in 113 2/3 innings with the Sea Dogs. The 24-year-old paired that with a 3.17 ERA while staying in the back end of the top-60.
