“Saint Louie Louie, oh baby” <— is this anything?

REMINDER: I’m putting this up a little early to remind everyone in the Seattle area to head over to Growler Guys in Lake City to join the Lookout Landing Watch Party. Kids and dogs welcome. There’s a rumor that there are prizes, but I haven’t confirmed that.

Here’s something underdiscussed about Logan Gilbert’s season:

From his debut through the end of last year, Logan Gilbert’s record includes just a single month in which his four-seamer averaged 96.5 mph (September 2022). But then this year, he went and did it in June. And in July. And in August. I think this is related to some changes he’s made to amp up the torque in his delivery. But watching it just get better and better as the season goes on has been a sight to see. Suffice it to say, this is something I’ll be watching during today’s game.

Today, he’ll face off against Kyle Gibson, who never lived up to the ace expectations some had for him but has had a very respectable career as a workhorse putting up average results year after year for over a decade. The big similarity between today’s starters is in their plus extension, but unfortunately, that’s not something that really reads on TV.

Lineups

No Robles today, but otherwise a pretty standard lineup for the M’s. The Cards have yet another MLB lineup featuring a pair of Hall of Famers hitting back-to-back. Why does it feel like everyone’s got that these days?

This Day In Mariners History

  • 1997: Ken Griffey, Jr. hits his 50th home run of the year, which was a bigger deal back then; he was just the 22nd player ever to do it
  • 1998: Junior does it again, hitting his 50th home run of the year on the same day a year later and becoming just the third player to ever do it in back-to-back years
  • 2011: Mamma Mia! Alex Liddi makes his debut, becoming the first person born and raised in Italy to play in MLB (you don’t want to see the rest of the Mariners’ box score that day)
  • 2023: Brash embarrasses Arozarena and Raleigh nabs Raley. Love when enemies become friends
