Minor League Recap - Captains Victory in Extras

Lynchburg and Columbus have high scoring nights and the Lake County Captains go to 11 before securing the win.

Columbus Clippers (71-63) - AAA

DUR 7 - COL 10

Box Score

Columbus Clippers pitching staff had a strong night. Conner Gillispie pitched 5.0 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and striking out 5. James Karinchak threw his first rehab appearance. Karinchak went a full inning, striking out 1 and walking 1. Randy Labaut allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk - pitching only 0.2 innings. Anthony Gose (yes, he’s back with the team again) took over for Labaut and pitched 1.1 innings allowing only 2 hits and striking out 2. Peter Strzelecki closed out the game with a dominate hitless, runless 9th inning on 8 pitches.

Angel Martínez had himself a 4 hit night including a RBI double in bottom of the 8th. Juan Brito (3), Johnathan Rodriguez (2), and Gabriel Arias (2) all also had multi-hit nights as well. Bryan Lavastida and Raynel Delgado also recorded hits of their own. Columbus’ 10 runs started with a Rodriguez sac fly to score Martínez. In the bottom of the 3rd, Brito doubled to score Martínez, Rodriguez launched a 3-run HR, and Arias launched a solo homer of his own.

In the bottom of the 4th, Brito added to the home run party with 2-run bomb to left center. In the bottom of the 5th, Gabriel Arias scored when Myles Straw grounded out to second base bringing the Clippers up 9 to 4.

Akron RubberDucks (76-54) - AA

AKR 5 - RIC 7

Box Score

Aaron Davenport got the start for the RubberDucks. Davenport went 4.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, striking out 4 batters. Alaska Abney gave up a pair of runs on 4 hits in 2.1 innings of work. Jack Leftwich got his 6th loss, also allowing a pair of runs on 2 hits.

Akron offense tried to keep the team in the game despite the pitching woes. C.J. Kayfus had a 2 hit night, driving in Cooper Ingle in the top of the 1st. Jorge Burgos followed with a two run HR to bring Kayfus across the plat. Joe Lampe grounded out, scoring Kahlil Watson putting the RubberDucks up 4-0 in the top of the 1st. Unfortunately Akron’s last run came in the top of the 3rd on a single from Yordys Valdes that scored Milan Tolentino.

Lake County Captains (76-52) - High A

LC 4 - PEO 3

Box Score

The Captains needed 11 innings to best the Peoria Chiefs. Dylan DeLucia started the game and only gave up 1 run, 6 hits, and a walk while striking out 5 in 3.2 innings of work. Matt Jachec allowed 2 runs and 3 hits while striking out 5 in 3.1 innings pitched. Josh Harlow wen 2.1 innings of scoreless ball, only giving up 1 hit and striking out 2. Steven Perez earned his 3rd win of the season pitching the final out of the 10th and the full 11th inningl. He walked a batter and struck out 3.

The Captains had 4 runs on 10 hits. Scoring kicked off early with Wuilfredo Antunez scoring in the top of the 2nd after Maick Collado grounded into a double play. Esteban Gonzalez singled on a ground ball, scoring Ralphy Velazquez. In the top of the 5th Jake Fox hit a solo homer insurance run, but the Chiefs tied it up in the bottom of the 7th. The Captains emerged victorious in the top of the 11th as Jonah Advincula singled to left to score Esteban Gonzalez.

Lynchburg Hillcats (66-61) - Low A

LYN 9 - FBG 5

Box Score

The Hillcats came out on top with starting pitcher Jogly Garcia going 4.0 innings and only allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. Garcia struck out 9 batters. Jervis Alfaro earned his 2nd win on the season after throwing 3.0 innings and allowing 4 hits and 2 unearned runs, but striking out 5. Izaak Martinez threw the remaining 2 innings of the game, a non-save situation. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 3.

Hillcats offense were gifted a early run in the top of the 2nd when the Nationals starting pitcher balked with bases loaded. Welbyn Francisca singled on a ground ball to score Bennett Thompson. The momentum carried into the top of the 3rd with a single from Barrett Riebock scored Garrett Howe. Manuel Mejias added a single of his own to bring home Riebock. The top of the 4th was not much different, Ryan Cesarini grounded out to short, scoring Francisca.

In the top of the 8th Cesarini added two more RBI with a double to right, scoring Francisca and Christian Knapczyk and bringing the Hillcats up 7-4. Cesarini crossed home plate when Riebock hit a sac fly to center. Lynchburg’s final run cam off the bat of Manuel Mejias as an RBI single scoring Juan Benjamin.
