Mets Homer Their Way to Sixth Straight Win, 7-2 Over Boston

The Mets (75-64) took the series against Boston (70-69) with a 7-2 triumph on Tuesday evening at Citi Field. A career night from David Peterson, another standout game from Francisco Lindor, and three home runs from the offense carried the team to its sixth consecutive win. This marks the fifth time this season that the Mets have won five or more games in a row, the most streaks for New York since 2000.

In the heat of a playoff chase, the Mets’ staff continued their dominance by not allowing a home run for the fifth straight game, recording 14 strikeouts — just one shy of their season high. With Lindor leading the charge, New York is playing some of its best baseball at the most crucial time of the year, now sitting 11 games above .500 with 23 left to play in the regular season. Since May 30, the Mets are 53-31, the best record in baseball.

Peterson delivered a stellar performance, earning the win by allowing just one run on six hits over six innings, walking one, and striking out a career-high 11 on his 29th birthday. His ERA now stands at 2.75 on the season. The Mets are now 14-3 in his starts, and he owns an impressive 9-1 record.

The Mets opened the scoring in the third with a two-run homer from Lindor for his 30th of the year. This marks the fifth time in his career that he has reached the 30-home run milestone, trailing only Alex Rodriguez, who achieved the feat seven times, for the most 30-home run seasons by a shortstop in MLB history.

Peterson’s only run allowed came in the fourth when a pair of singles from Masataka Yoshida and Nick Sogard cut New York’s lead to 2-1.

Jose Butto took over in the seventh and pitched a perfect inning.

Mark Vientos added to the lead with a solo homer in the seventh, his 22nd of the year. Pete Alonso also broke out of an 0-for-11 slump with a single.

Butto came back out for the eighth but quickly ran into trouble, walking the first two batters before being replaced by Reed Garrett. Despite the tough situation with the tying runs on base and no outs, Garrett limited the damage to just one run on a sacrifice fly, followed by an inning-ending double play to preserve the Mets’ 3-2 lead.

The Mets put the game out of reach with a four-run eighth. Jeff McNeil led off with a hit, followed by a single from Francisco Alvarez. Lindor continued his big night with an RBI double, Brandon Nimmo added a sacrifice fly, and Alonso capped the rally with a two-run homer, putting the icing on the cake to make it a final 7-2 Mets. The home run was the first baseman’s 31st of the season and his 10th on the first pitch.

With a five-run lead, Ryne Stanek was called upon to close it out, and he did so with a 1-2-3 inning to secure the win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Lindor earns Tuesday’s honor after going 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, a double, and three RBI.

Lindor continues to build his case for the National League MVP, as his hitting streak has extended to 14 games — with 13 extra-base hits and 15 runs scored in that span. He owns a 32-game on-base streak, two shy of the longest single-season streak in Mets’ history. And he does it all at the plate with elite defense and base-running on top of it all.

ON DECK

Tylor Megill (3-5, 3.4.82 ERA) will start on the mound tomorrow as the Mets look to sweep the series with the Red Sox. Boston’s starter will be Tanner Houck (8-9, 43.12 ERA). SNY will air the game at 7:10 p.m.
