Mariners Game #134 Preview: 8/28/24, TBR at SEA

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Mariners look to win a second series in a row, a day after striking out 17 times

The Mariners finish up their homestand today before heading off on a long, three-city road trip that will keep them away from T-Mobile Park until September 10, when the children are well ensconced back in school and the pumpkin spice lattes flow like rivers in the street. Today is a nice, sunny day here at T-Mobile, so hopefully the Mariners can send the summer out in style, maybe by sending a few balls over the fence.

Lineups:

At long last, a Rays lineup graphic! Aside from the fact that it’s giving a UPN sitcom in the early ‘90s, it gets points for being mostly readable, even if it makes me want to grab my Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper and blast some tunes on my pink GE Sidestep.

News:

As you can see from that fetching lineup graphic above, J.P. Crawford is back. Dominic Canzone has been optioned to Tacoma in his place, meaning Leo Rivas, who was initially called up to fill in for Crawford at short, remains with the team. As a point of order, Canzone will not be eligible to return when rosters expand on September 1; the 10-day rule still applies in this case.

Game information:

Game time: 1:10 PT

TV: ROOT Sports NW, with Aaron Goldsmith and Mike Blowers

Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports, with Rick Rizzs and Dave Sims

Today in Mariners history:

  • 1997: With the dawn of interdivisional play, Omar Olivares becomes the first Mariners pitcher to drive in a run, in a 9-5 loss at Colorado.
  • 2001: Ichiro gets his 200th hit of the year; he’s just the third AL rookie to reach the 200-hit mark since 1964. The miletsone happened in game #132 for the Mariners, matching Darrin Erstad (2000) as fastest in the Majors to 200 hits since Joe Medwick in 1935 (131 games), & fastest in the AL since Al Simmons in 1925 (125 games).
  • 2015: The Mariners fire Jack Z. Assistant GM Jeff Kingston is named interim GM. To this day I cannot spell Zduriencik without copy-pasting it.
