Morning Briefing: Mets Settle For Split In First Series of Road Trip

Good morning, Mets fans!

After clinching the season series victory over the San Diego Padres, the Mets lost 3-2 on Sunday to split with the Padres in their first series of this 10-game road trip. They led 2-0 in the eighth after getting 6 1/3 strong innings from José Quintana, but José Buttó coughed up a game-tying two-run homer and Edwin Díaz surrendered a walk-off shot to Jackson Merrill.

Wild Card Update

The Nationals beat the Braves 5-1 to avoid a sweep.  That said, the Mets are 2.5 games behind Atlanta for the third Wild Card spot.

The Arizona Diamondbacks secured their sixth straight victory and are now 4.5 games ahead of the Braves. The Padres’ victory against the Mets made them three games ahead of the Braves.

According to Tim Healey of Newsday, the Mets have placed Paul Blackburn on the 15-injured list with a right hand bruise. In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled Huscar Brazoban.

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets have released outfielder Eddie Rosario from his current contract. Rosario spent a brief amount of time with the Syracuse Mets, and he did not have much success. The former NLCS MVP had 30 plate appearances while batting .103/.133/.310/.443.

The Mets announced that third baseman Brett Baty fractured his left finger after getting hit by a pitch in Thursday’s Triple-A game. Baty is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks.

The Yankees have announced that they have signed former Mets relief pitcher Phil Bickford to a major league contract. Bickford appeared in 25 games for the Mets throughout the 2023 season while posting a 4.62 earned run average. To make room for Bickford on the active roster, the Bronx Bombers designated RP Michael Tonkin for assignment. Tonkin has pitched 56 innings for the Yankees this season while owning an ERA of 3.38.

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that they recalled catcher Ivan Herrera from AAA after placing Willson Contreras on the 10-day IL due to a right middle finger fracture. Herrera has registered 192 plate appearances with the Cardinals this season while batting .279/.340/.378/.718. This is not great news for the Cardinals, as Contreras is batting .262/.380/.468/.848 in 358 plate appearances.

According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder Michael A. Taylor on outright waivers. Taylor has had a rough season thus far, batting .194/.296/.283/.540 on 277 plate appearances.
