Lindor, Peterson Lead Mets In 7-1 Win

When you’re entering the final stretch of the season, your best players must step up. The New York Mets best player is Francisco Lindor. He absolutely showcased in the Mets 7-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. He wasn’t the only one, as David Peterson gave the Mets another great outing in the win, and he keeps being a steady presence in the starting rotation. The Mets have now taken two of the first three from this four-game series against a Padres team that came into this series red-hot.

Lindor Mashes Two

He’s here, he’s there, he’s everywhere, Lindor, Lindor. He’s been the Mets best player since being moved into the leadoff spot. Since then, he’s set the tone for this team. In the top of the 4th, with New York up 1-0, Lindor took a 2-0 sweeper from Michael King for a grand slam. The grand slam broke the game open on the road for the Mets. He did that from the left side of the plate, and he wasn’t done. After the Padres got a run back, Lindor, this time from the right side, homered again to give the Mets a 6-1 lead.

It was Lindor’s 26th and 27th home runs of the season. Three away from another 30/30 season. He’s five stolen bases away from another 30/30/30 season. Who knows if his season will be enough to overcome Shohei Ohtani for MVP. However, he’s the MVP of the Mets.

Peterson Is The MVP Of The Rotation

A case can be made for Sean Manaea, but Peterson is the most consistent pitcher in the starting rotation. Don’t think many thought that would be the case coming into the season. Especially after he missed time due to hip surgery. On Saturday, Peterson gave the Mets innings, going 7 1/3, and lowered his ERA to 2.85. Peterson continues to give the Mets a chance to win every time he takes the mound. He doesn’t dominate, but he keeps making his pitches, getting ground balls and is consistent.

Dedniel Núñez Returns

Not to get lost in the Lindor excitement was the return of Dedniel Núñez. It looked like he never left. He was impressive in his 1 2/3 innings of work as he got the final five outs of the game. Núñez struck out two in his return. More importantly for the bullpen, his presence makes the unit better.

On Deck:

The Mets will send the struggling Jose Quintana to the mound in Game 4 of this series. The Padres will counter with Martín Pérez. The game will be telecast locally on WPIX at 4:10 p.m. EDT and broadcast on WCBS 880.
