Francisco Lindor’s On-Base Streak Reaches 22 Games

Friday night wasn’t particularly kind to the Mets.

They were shut out by old friend Joe Musgrove and co., Paul Blackburn exited the game in the third inning after a comebacker hit his wrist, and the Braves were gifted a win after Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams committed an error in the bottom of the tenth.

Again, a lot went wrong.

But one bright spot came in the top of the ninth for the Mets. Facing a loss to the Padres in the early morning, Francisco Lindor lined a double to the opposite field off righty Sean Reynolds.

His 34th double was only the second hit of the night for the Mets, but it extended Lindor’s on-base streak to 22 games on the season.

While it wasn’t the victory the Mets needed or looked for, it was a small victory worth celebrating. It was another sign of life from Lindor, who has been putting up MVP numbers since being moved up to the leadoff spot.

And for those wondering, yes, they have been MVP numbers. In the leadoff spot, Lindor is now slashing .302/.376/.534 with 18 homers, 26 doubles, and 62 runs scored. Far different from the .235/.288/.409 slash line he recorded in 29 games batting third.

The main reason, however, for celebrating the on-base streak is its connection to winning. In wins this season, Lindor is slashing .337/.411/.652 with 21 of his 26 homers. In losses, Lindor is only getting on base at a .257 clip. Basically put, if Lindor gets on base and does damage with the bat, it directly correlates to wins for the Mets.

In regards to franchise history, Lindor is making strides towards the all-time on-base streak. John Olerud got on base in 47 consecutive games, starting the streak on September 7 of the 1998 season and ending it on May 5 of the ’99 season.

Lindor is much closer to the single-season record. That crown is held by Pete Alonso, who reached base in 34 consecutive games during his historic 2019 rookie season.

Lindor will get his chance tonight to extend the streak to 23 games against righty Michael King. The former Yankee won’t be an easy target for the streak, as King has pitched to a 3.18 ERA and 1.175 WHIP in 24 games. Lindor is o-for-3 against King with two strikeouts.
