Valera goes yard twice, Arias continues hot streak and CLE DSL Goryl drops first game 1 of league’s QF

Cleveland Guardians minor league recap for Friday, August 23, 2024

Columbus Clippers 8, Indianapolis Indians 9 F/10

Box Score · Clippers fall to 63-58

George Valera is continuing on his great stretch since the middle of July, showing that he wants to be up! He banished two balls out of Huntington Park, while finishing the day 3-5 with two RBI to his name.

Gabriel Arias also had an amazing swing last night, sending a ball 460 feet and off the top half of the batter’s eye.

Will Dion had a rough night, finishing with five earned runs on six hits and two walks. But Erik Sabrowski ended up with the loss, as he blew a save in the 9th and ended up giving away the winning run in the 10th.

Akron RubberDucks 3, Harrisburg Senators 2

Box Score · RubberDucks improve to 69-48

Aaron Bracho was on his game Thursday. He went 3-5 with a homer, having the biggest impact on the game. Cooper Ingle also continues to impress, going 2-4.

Tommy Mace had a very good five innings of work. He only gave up three hits and K’ed two as he gave up one run (not earned).

Lenny Torres and Jack Leftwich took over after that, and only gave up an extra run in their combined four innings of work.

Lake County Captains 7, West Michigan Whitecaps 1

Box Score · Captains improve to 66-49

Even though Travis Bazzana, Ralphy Velazquez and Angel Genao did not play Thursday, the Captains offense still ended up putting up a few crooked numbers on the Whitecaps. This just goes to show how deep the low end of this Guardians farm system really is. Jake Fox, Jorge Burgos, Alex Mooney and Wuilfredo Antunez all had multi-hit days, and they accounted for the vast majority of the team’s runs.

Yorman Gomez threw seven innings of one-run baseball with five K’s. He allowed minimal traffic on the basepaths and did business on the mound. It was smooth-sailing for the Captains (pun intended) from there on as they would take the game 7-1.

Lynchburg Hillcats 4, Salem Red Sox 5

Box Score · Hillcats fall to 62-53

Jogly Garcia had rough Thursday, going 1.2 IP and giving up three earned runs. Caden Favors also pitched his second pro appearance last night but he got the L on two more runs.

As for the offense, it did its job Thursday. Logun Clark had himself a 3-5 day with an RBI. Tommy Hawke also got on base three times, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough to gain the edge over the Red Sox.

DSL CLE Goryl 5, DSL Red Sox Red 12

Box Score · Red Sox Lead 1-0

Well, the DSL Quarterfinals are here, and Cleveland’s Goryl team wasn’t able to make a good first impression. In game one, they got outscored by 7 despite holding it close for 6 and a half innings. What broke the team was a 6-run 7th inning for the Red Sox (5 unearned). Not the best way to start things off in the quarterfinal, but let’s hope there is some more fire under the team heading into their next game of the series.
