Alice Lloyd College Begins Fall Semester with Campus Improvements

0 0

This week, Alice Lloyd College welcomed students back to campus for the 2024 fall semester, which officially began on Tuesday, August 20th.

For over one hundred years, Alice Lloyd College has been able to provide a high-quality, character-based education to Appalachian students while charging no out-of-pocket costs for tuition. This fall, thanks to generous friends across the country, the College is excited to welcome home our Eagles and take our commitment one step further by eliminating costs for textbooks and providing all students with an iPad.

In addition to maintaining our commitment to provide mountain students with an affordable education, we are excited to announce the completion of several campus projects that will enhance our students’ experience in Pippa Passes.

The July 2022 flooding washed out the banks of Caney Creek along Purpose Road and affected campus buildings and vehicles. To prevent further devastation from flooding, a retaining wall that spans the length of the campus has been completed. The wall features beautiful railings and matches the native stone found on many campus building exteriors. The retaining wall fits in perfectly with the campus aesthetic and protects our creek banks from erosion and our buildings and vehicles from flood waters.

Along with the retaining wall, Purpose Road has been entirely paved and striped, offering more parking spaces than we’ve previously had. Purpose Road now features a new curb and gutter system along the banks of Caney Creek.

ALC has also landscaped campus and given the meadow an upgrade. New trees, shrubs, and flowers can be found in mulched beds with accompanying river rock all throughout campus, perfectly tying together the natural beauty of Alice Lloyd College with our facilities. The meadow between the Davis Student Center and June Buchanan School is now artificial turf and has a small rock wall for safety and to create seating for the campus community. The synthetic turf sheds water well, allowing JBS and ALC students to use it again shortly after experiencing inclement weather.

The lobby of Campbell Arts Center has been renovated and progress has been made in the heart of our campus, on the Chapel and Bell Tower. The Campbell Arts Center lobby now has new lighting and new flooring. The Chapel and Bell Tower is nearing completion, and four stained glass windows are now in place.

Campus residence halls have received significant upgrades. Hermann Hall, a women’s residence hall, has received a new HVAC system, and the bathrooms in Carrick Hall, a men’s residence hall, have been completely renovated. Male residence halls, Howard Hall and Berger-Auen Hall, have received the most work. The two spaces now have all new lighting, new flooring, and fresh paint throughout. The facilities will soon receive new windows and HVAC unit upgrades. In the future, the exterior of the residence halls will also be revamped to match newer facilities on campus.

These additions and renovations to campus would not be possible without the generosity of wonderful friends across the country. Their gracious support allows Alice Lloyd College to continue offering mountain students an affordable, character-based education, with no out-of-pocket costs for tuition. We are blessed to be able to provide state-of-the-art facilities to our young people as they work to earn their education.
