Mets Minors Recap: Garrett, Reid-Foley Struggle in Rehab Appearances

Sunday was a very unusual day in the Mets’ minor leagues. The Syracuse Mets played a normal game, while the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Brooklyn Cyclones each played doubleheaders. Meanwhile, the St. Lucie Mets were supposed to play a doubleheader, but poor weather canceled both games. Lack of offense was the story of the day, as the top three affiliates scored more than two runs just once in their combined five games.

What was also concerning were the rehab appearances from Reed Garrett and Sean Reid-Foley in Double-A, with both struggling and each unable to make it through an entire inning.

Triple-A

The Syracuse Mets lacked offense in their loss to the Columbus Clippers, falling 4-1. The Mets recorded just six hits, and their lone run came in the ninth inning on a Mike Brosseau sacrifice fly. The team went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base.

The Mets used just three pitchers, with starter Mike Vasil able to make it through six innings. He allowed ten baserunners, though, with four coming across to score. He also struck out just two, but he’s had far worse outings this year than this one. Max Kranick and newcomer Tyler Zuber finished the game with a scoreless inning each.

Double-A

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies were shut out in the first game of their doubleheader against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, losing 3-0. The Rumble Ponies tallied just four hits and three walks, never really posing a threat to score.

Luis Moreno had a spectacular start for Binghamton, allowing just two baserunners and striking out nine over five innings pitched. His outing was spoiled by a tumultuous rehab appearance from Reed Garrett, who allowed three runs and five baserunners in just one-third of an inning. Sean Reid-Foley also struggled in his rehab appearance, walking three in two-thirds of an inning.

Game 2: New Hampshire Fisher Cats (41-58) 5, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (52-47) 1

While the Rumble Ponies scored in game two, the result wasn’t much better. Binghamton fell to New Hampshire 5-1, with the Rumble Ponies recording just five hits and three walks in the contest. The Rumble Ponies scored on a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but by that point, they were already down 3-1.

It was a forgettable Double-A debut for Jonathan Pintaro, who started the game and couldn’t make it out of the first inning. He allowed three runs and recorded just two outs before there was a call to the bullpen. Joshua Cornielly also made his Double-A debut in the contest and had a much better go than Pintaro, striking out three over two scoreless innings.

High-A

Game 1: Brooklyn Cyclones (47-54) 2, Aberdeen IronBirds (53-48) 5

The Brooklyn Cyclones also had a doubleheader, and they, too, dropped their first game to the Aberdeen IronBirds 5-2. The Cyclones’ lone runs came in the sixth and seventh innings while the team was already down 5-0. The team recorded just five hits and walked twice in the defeat.

Jawilme Ramirez drew the loss for the game, though he was solid by allowing just one run in four innings. Eduardo Herrera was the pitcher who had a rough go of it, allowing six baserunners and four runs to score in just one inning. Jake Stevenson finished off the game with a perfect inning, but it was too late at that point to matter.

Game 2: Brooklyn Cyclones (48-54) 6, Aberdeen IronBirds (53-49) 4

The first and only game won by a Mets minor league affiliate on Sunday was in the second game of the doubleheader between the Cyclones and the IronBirds, with Brooklyn coming out on top 6-4. Interestingly enough, Aberdeen went out in front 4-0 within the first three innings, but the Cyclones stormed back with six unanswered runs. Mateo Gil played hero, recording three separate RBI hits.

The Cyclones needed just three pitchers to get through seven innings for the win, with Justin Lawson throwing the bulk of the game with a four-inning appearance. He earned the win, allowing no earned runs and striking out four. Alan Perdomo also had a solid game, recording a perfect inning for the save in his second High-A appearance.

Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (34-66) Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (51-46) POSTPONED

The St. Lucie Mets and Fort Myers Mighty Mussels were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday, but neither game was played due to inclement weather. Both games were canceled and will not be made up, as the two teams do not meet again this season.
