Mets Drop Series Against Angels After 3-2 Loss

The New York Mets’ weekend took a turn for the worse as they lost the series finale to the Angels 3-2, leaving multiple runners stranded in scoring position. This defeat drops the Mets 1.5 games behind in the wild card race.

Despite a decent performance from the pitching staff, starting with Jose Quintana who allowed three runs on three hits and four walks over five innings, the Mets couldn’t capitalize offensively. Relievers Adam Ottavino, Danny Young, and Phil Maton kept the Angels scoreless after Quintana, but the damage was already done.

The Mets’ offense struggled throughout the series, leaving a combined 20 runners in scoring position in the first two games and continuing this trend on Sunday. Harrison Bader and Francisco Lindor each drove in a run to keep the game close, but the Mets left seven runners on base, stalling potential rallies.

Pete Alonso, J.D. Martinez, and Mark Vientos all went hitless, with Alonso stranding two runners. In the eighth inning, Lindor nearly tied the game with a hard-hit ball down the right-field line, initially ruled fair, but then overturned as foul after a review. Vientos later grounded into a double play, ending another Mets rally.

Griffin Canning led the Angels with a dominant performance, pitching five innings with eight strikeouts. In the bottom of the third inning, a wild pitch by Quintana allowed Taylor Ward to score, tying the game at 1-1 and advancing Jo Adell to third. Matt Thaiss followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Adell and giving the Angels a 2-1 lead. Kevin Pillar added another sacrifice fly, bringing home Zach Neto and extending the lead to 3-1, sealing the Mets’ fate.

Statistic of the Game: Mets’ Left On Base Woes

The Mets did not have a good weekend with runners in scoring position as they left a combined 27 runners on base throughout the three games this series. They would leave seven on-base during the finale, which was notable during the two rallies they attempted to bring runners home but could not do so.

Player of the Game: Adam Ottavino

Adam Ottavino had another solid outing today, pitching another scoreless inning and striking out two. In his last seven appearances, Ottavino has only given up one run and one walk in 5 1/3 innings pitched on five hits.

On Deck

The Mets are right back at it tomorrow as they fly to St. Louis for a makeup game from May 8. The Amazin’s will look to get back in the win column, throwing out Sean Manaea (7-4, 3.50 ERA) while the Cardinals send Andre Pallante (4-5, 4.04 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is at 5:15 pm ET and will be broadcast on SNY and WCBS AM 880.
