Cleveland Guardians minor league recap for Monday, July 29, 2024

Columbus Clippers 10, Memphis Redbirds 3

Box Score · Clippers improve to 49-51

The Columbus offense had a big day, surprisingly led by Gabriel Arias, who had a monster game. Arias went 3-for-5 at the plate with his first home run since being sent back down to Triple-A. He also stole a base.

Raynel Delgado also had a great game, going 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. He stole two bases, including a steal of home plate. Jose Tena went 2-for-5 while Juan Brito went 2-for-4 with a double. Johnathan Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with a walk and Kyle Manzardo walked and was hit by a pitch.

On the pitching side of the equation, Logan Allen allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. He walked two and surprisingly didn’t strike out anyone.

Nick Mikolajchak finished off the game with a scoreless inning.

Akron RubberDucks 3, Bowie Baysox 2

Box Score · RubberDucks improve to 56-40

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, Akron scored twice to walk off Bowie on Sunday. Milan Tolentino almost had the walk-off winner, hitting a game-tying double (where catcher Kody Huff was thrown out at the plate). Dayan Frias then finished off the victory with a walk-off single.

Tolentino went 3-for-4 on the day while Aaron Bracho went 1-for-3 with a walk. The lone other offensive standout was Petey Halpin, who went 1-for-2 with two walks.

Starting pitcher Aaron Davenport was downright brilliant. Davenport pitched 4 23 shutout innings with two hits allowed while striking out a season-high nine batters and walking none.

Jack Leftwich and Tyler Thornton both added scoreless innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts each. Magnus Ellerts also impressed, inheriting a bases-loaded situation in the eighth inning and only allowing one inherited runner to score. He earned the win with a solid 1 23 innings pitched without allowing any runs of his own to score.

Lake County Captains 2, Great Lakes Loons 3

Box Score · Captains fall to 57-38

Travis Bazzana was responsible for the game’s only run in his pro debut on Friday, so it’s no surprise that he had a big impact in his second game Sunday. Searching for his first hit as a member of the Guardians organization, he did just that with a single in his first at bat of the game. In his third at bat, he blasted and opposite field double, reaching third with some good awareness and baserunning after a ball was mishandled before scoring on another miscue.

No one else had a multi-hit game, although Alex Mooney was hit by two pitches and stole two bases while Jonah Advincula walked and was hit by a pitch.

Starting pitcher Trenton Denholm was superb, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking none in six innings of work.

Shawn Rapp and Steve Hajjar added scoreless innings. Unfortunately Zane Morehouse couldn’t get an out in the ninth inning, allowing a pair of runs on four hits and a walk to blow a save and also take the loss.

Lynchburg Hillcats 3, Columbia Fireflies 4 (F/10)

Box Score · Hillcats fall to 50-46

Lynchburg couldn’t get much going offensively. A bright spot was Jaison Chourio walking twice and stealing his 37th base of the season. Juan Benjamin had the lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Robert Lopez went 1-for-2 with a walk while Christian Knapczyk had a two-run double. Tommy Hawke went 1-for-4 with a walk.

Starting pitcher Yorman Gomez allowed a pair of runs in 3 23 innings on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Alonzo Richardson allowed a run in 2 23 innings while Abel Brito allowed an inherited runner to score in 2 13 otherwise scoreless frames. Josh Harlow took the loss, allowing the ghost runner to score in the 10th inning.
