Phillies acquire reliever Carlos Estévez for pair of pitching prospects

For the third time in as many years, the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Angels have linked up on a deal in the days leading up to the trade deadline.

Two years after acquiring outfielder Brandon Marsh and RHP Noah Syndergaard in a pair of trades with the Halos, the Phillies have landed reliever Carlos Estévez from the Angels. The Phillies will send pitching prospects George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri to the Angels in return, the club announced.

Estévez, 31, was an All-Star a year ago, and is having an even better contract year. Across 34 games for the Angels, Estévez has 20 saves and a 2.38 ERA. He’ll became another late-game relief option for manager Rob Thomson, alongside Jeff Hoffman, Matt Strahm, José Alvarado and Orion Kerkering.

The Phillies gave up a decent return for the rental. Phillies Nation‘s Ty Daubert ranked Klassen and Aldegheri as the No. 4 and No. 10 prospects in the system in the most recent update.

Klassen, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, has a 1.97 ERA and 0.978 WHIP across 59 innings between Low-A Clearwater and High-A Jersey Shore this season. He’s flashed a wipeout slider.

Aldegheri was signed as an international free agent out of Italy prior to the 2019 season. The lefty is 6-7 with a 3.23 ERA and 109 strikeouts across 78 innings this season between High-A Jersey Shore and Double-A Reading.
