Senga Exits Season Debut Early With Calf Strain

Tonight was the moment that the Mets and Mets fans alike were looking forward to for a long time: the return of right-handed starting pitcher Kodai Senga to the mound against the Atlanta Braves after being activated from the 60-day injured list (right shoulder capsule strain).

Senga was rather effective through the first five innings of his season debut. However, his night ended in sudden concern as he fell to the ground and was forced to exit the game after injuring himself while pursuing a pop-up. He would end up walking off the field under his own power, though he was favoring his left leg.

The Mets later confirmed that Senga exited the game with a left calf strain. It would appear he avoided a worst-case scenario, though calf strains typically take several weeks to heal and could keep Senga out of action for the near future. After coming off of a long-term injury, however, the hope now is that he does not have to go through another one.

The severity of the injury should become more clear once Senga undergoes an MRI, which will take place on Saturday according to manager Carlos Mendoza.

On the night, Senga threw 73 pitches while giving up two earned runs on two hits (one home run), one walk and nine strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings pitched. He also earned his first win of the year as the Mets held on to defeat Atlanta 8-4.
