Mariners Game #104 Preview: 7/24/24, LAA @ SEA

Can the Rock hold back the tide?

Once again in the month of July, the Mariners are faced with the task of salvaging a win out of an already lost series in an effort to remain unswept in 2024. Yet again they cheated death last night, despite detonating in the 5th inning, and remain in first place despite the loss. If we call a tie game a “brand new ballgame,” then we are now in a “brand new season.” The 2020 season was 60 games, and there are 59 to go, including today. As Logan Gilbert said last night, “If you had told us that we’d be right here with 60 games left, I would take that every time and I would take a chance with what we got right here in this clubhouse.”

Lineups:

Luis Castillo is on the mound today, facing the Angels for the 3rd time this year and the 9th in his career. Between his last two outings against Anaheim (13 IP combined), La Piedra has not allowed a run while striking out 11 halos. But, of course, pitching is not the Mariners’ problem right now. Over their last 7 games, M’s starters are rocking just a 1.59 ERA and are holding their opponents to a .164 batting average against.

Today’s lineup isn’t quite as odd as last night, with just Vosler and Locklear being the new faces. Both got hits last night — accounting for 2 of the M’s 3 — and the team will be looking for more production from them today. Before the game, Scott Servais said that he was impressed with them last night, especially Vosler, and that he’s hoping for them to keep stringing good and long at-bats together.

News:

  • Justin Hollander gave an injury update in the dugout pregame. He said that they are still looking at Julio’s sprain, and that they will be reassessing his situation at around the 7-10 day mark since the injury.
  • J.P.’s broken hand means that he will be out of the lineup for 4-6 weeks and will not be traveling with the team.
  • Dominic Canzone is progressing well, and the team hopes to have him back in mid-August. He’ll be heading down to Arizona after the homestand.
