Minors Recap: Shintaro Fujinami Recrords Another Scoreless Outing

Sunday was not kind to the Mets’ minor league affiliates, as just the Syracuse Mets won their matchup while Binghamton, Brooklyn, and St. Lucie all lost.

The highlight of the day was Boston Baro, MMO’s no. 18 ranked Mets prospect, going 4-for-6 with two doubles in St. Lucie’s loss. The 2023 eighth-round draft pick has been solid in his first full professional season, owning a .770 OPS through 61 games.

Triple-A

The Syracuse Mets defeated the Rochester Red Wings in a low-scoring affair, 4-3. It was a back-and-forth game with Rochester tying the game in the top of the eighth inning, but Syracuse regained the lead on a Matt O’Neill home run. The other runs were driven in on singles from Rhylan Thomas and Luke Ritter.

The Syracuse pitching staff did a good job in this game, holding the Red Wings to just three runs. Dom Hamel was the starter, and he gave up two of the runs, while Ty Adcock gave up the other despite earning the win. Josh Walker, Max Kranick, Shintaro Fujinami, and Matt Gage all had scoreless outings with Gage recording the save after a shutdown ninth inning.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies lost to the Erie SeaWolves due to a low-scoring game from the offense. The game was 6-0 heading into the ninth inning, but the Rumble Ponies put together three runs to drive the game into save territory.

Drake Osborn drove in Binghamton’s first run of the game with an RBI single before Stanley Consuegra tacked on two more with a home run. It wasn’t enough, though, as Binghamton fell 6-3.

Brandon Sproat started the game and had one of his shakier starts of the year. The top prospect allowed three runs in four innings, though he did strike out six batters. Five relievers followed Sproat, with Jordan Geber and Josh Hejka surrendering the other three runs scored by Erie.

High-A

The Brooklyn Cyclones fell to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws 9-6 despite a strong offensive game from the Cyclones. The game went into extra innings with both teams tied at six apiece, but the Blue Claws tacked on three runs in the top of the tenth and the Cyclones were unable to answer back.

Brooklyn recorded 13 hits with five offensive players recording multi-hit games. Omar De Los Santos was the standout player, recording two hits including a home run, a walk, three runs, and a stolen base. While De Los Santos has been stealing bags all year, he has not hit at all, so this was one of his better games of the year. Donovan Antonia also shined with three hits.

Felipe De La Cruz struggled as the starter for Brooklyn, allowing five runs in 3 1/3 innings of work. Jawilme Ramirez and Justin Lawson did a fantastic job out of the bullpen to keep Brooklyn in the game, throwing a combined 4 2/3 scoreless innings of work. Joshua Cornielly and Jake Stevenson, though, gave the game away by allowing Jersey Shore to tie the game in the ninth and ultimately take the lead in the tenth.

Low-A

The St. Lucie Mets scored nine runs against the Jupiter Hammerheads but still lost by five! The game entered the eighth inning tied 8-8 and St. Lucie actually took the lead, but Jupiter scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to completely put the game away.

Boston Baro looked fantastic, recording four hits including two doubles.

St. Lucie needed seven pitchers to get through the game, with four of the pitchers recording less than three outs. That included Alfred Vega, who made his first appearance of 2024. It was a nightmare, as he gave up six runs in two-thirds of an inning to put a close game out of reach. Zach Thornton also struggled, allowing three runs in one inning of work. Joel Díaz got the bulk of the work, going four innings and allowing two runs, though he also struck out six batters.

Despite the great offensive game from St. Lucie, the struggles of the pitching staff gave the team no chance in this one.
