Morning Briefing: Mets To Open 2025 Season In Houston

As the 2025 MLB schedule was made public on Thursday, it was revealed that the Mets will kick off the 2025 season on March 27 in Houston against the Astros. Their home opener at Citi Field is scheduled for April 4 against the Toronto Blue Jays. For the release, the Mets posted a video in the vein of Mario Kart, with Mr. and Mrs. Met going through a track outside Citi Field and knocking out opponents whilst revealing game dates against certain teams.

The Mets will also open the second half of their 2024 campaign on the road against the Miami Marlins on Friday as Sean Manaea faces off against Edward Cabrera.

According to Justin Vigil-Zuniga of The Santa Clarita Valley Signal, former University of Oregon pitcher RJ Gordon is heading to Port St. Lucie after being selected by the club with the No. 383 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

According to Ari Alexander of KPRC Houston, the Mets have signed catcher Logan Porter to a major league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse. This season in Triple-A, Porter is batting .293/.390/.500. The 29-year-old appeared in 11 games with the Kansas City Royals last season. The signing was made as the Mets currently have two catchers on the IL in Syracuse.

1986: On this date in 1986, Mets players Rick Aguilera, Ron Darling, Bob Ojeda, and Tim Teufel were involved in an altercation with Houston police at Cooter’s, a local bar where athletes drank for free. Following a tough loss to the Astros, the group sought solace at the bar. Accounts differ on who initiated the conflict, but it ended with all four players being arrested. The incident gained notoriety, with the bar selling “Houston Police 4, Mets 0” t-shirts during the ’86 NLCS. The team thereafter opted to save their drinking for the plane ride home.
