Alec Bohm eliminated from Home Run Derby in semifinal swing-off

Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm had some really impressive moments over what turned out to be a very long night in Monday’s Home Run Derby, but ultimately lost in a semifinal swing-off with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández.

Bohm was the first hitter to bat in Monday night’s Home Run Derby, and crushed 21 homers. It was tied with Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramírez for the most in the first round. Bohm, Ramírez, Hernández and Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. all advanced to the second round.

Bohm — who has 11 home runs this season, the lowest of any participant in the Home Run Derby — had some fun after advancing to the second round.

Heck, Bohm had quite a bit of fun during the first round. Each player has one timeout they can use per round, and when Bohm used his, fellow All-Stars Bryce Harper and Trea Turner were there to provide refreshments.

After a wait of approximately two hours, Bohm got off to a slow start in his second-round match with Hernández. Needing 14 home runs to match Hernández, Bohm hit exactly 14 thanks to a monster stretch after using his timeout. However, Bohm failed to hit a home run in the bonus round, sending things to a swing-off with Hernández.

Hernández ultimately advanced to the final round against Witt, as he homered on two of his three swings in the semifinal overtime, as opposed to once by Bohm. Nonetheless, it was an impressive showing from Bohm, who isn’t typically viewed as a home run hitter.

Bohm was the first Phillie to compete in the Home Run Derby since Kyle Schwarber did so in 2022. The last Phillie to win the event was Ryan Howard in 2006 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Howard was the second consecutive Phillie to win the event, as Bobby Abreu won the 2005 Home Run Derby at Comerica Park in Detroit.
