Weekly Statistical Spotlight: Mark Vientos

0 4

Mark Vientos is seizing his opportunity at third base. Not to mention he also soaked up the spotlight in the first game of the Subway Series earlier in the week. This week’s Statistical Spotlight features Mark Vientos and his plate approach for games from June 22 to June 28.

Vientos slashed .286/.400/.813 with an OPS of 1.213 this past week. He went 4 for 14, remarkably, with three of his four hits being home runs, two of which were against Gerrit Cole.  He also collected two walks, which shows his selectivity at the plate. On the downside, he did accrue five strikeouts, chasing most of the strikeout pitches high-and-out of the zone.

The graph below depicts all balls Mark Vientos made contact with, both in play and foul. His three home runs were mostly higher in the zone. His mammoth 451-foot home run was close to middle-middle, making it the longest home run for a Met this season. Vientos also showed his power to the opposite field during the first game of the Subway Series, by hitting a laser out to right field, which is shown on the home run that is up and away on the graph.

Vientos is doing an excellent job at covering pitches that are up in the zone by sending them for a ride. This has helped him secure his spot at third base for the foreseeable future as his bat has proved to be a valuable asset in the Mets lineup.

While Vientos took the reins at third base, it will be interesting to see what comes of Brett Baty. He has been producing nicely down in Triple-A Syracuse, and his potential move to second base is an intriguing storyline for the Mets second half of the season. Regardless, it does appear as if the Mets have found a long-term solution, likely at designated hitter once J.D. Martinez moves on, in Vientos.
