Morning Briefing: Subway Series Kicks Off Tonight

The Mets and Yankees begin the first round of the Subway Series at Citi Field tonight, with David Peterson (3-0, 3.97 ERA) taking the hill against reigning AL Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole (0-0, 4.50 ERA). The teams have split the season series in each of the last years. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

Starling Marte‘s MRI revealed bone inflammation in his right knee and he’s been told to rest for 15 days, meaning he’ll need to be placed on the injured list. Marte has been dealing with knee soreness this month and was removed from Saturday’s game against the Cubs after the first inning.

Edwin Díaz has officially been suspended for 10 games for violating MLB’s foreign substance policy. Díaz was ejected upon entering Sunday’s game at Wrigley Field after an umpire deemed his hand to be too sticky. He is allowed to appeal the suspension.

In the latest All-Star balloting update, Pete Alonso remained in fourth place among first basemen, while Francisco Lindor fell to seventh in shortstop voting and J.D. Martinez remained at seventh among designated hitters. Francisco Alvarez is now 10th in votes among catchers, while Harrison Bader has fallen out of the top 20 for outfielders.

The Mets have reinstated Luis Torrens from the paternity list and designated Joe Hudson for assignment. Hudson caught the ninth inning of the team’s win against the Cubs on Friday.

The Mets have promoted outfield prospect Stanley Consuegra to Double-A Binghamton. Consuegra is batting .228/.337/.381 with seven homers and 31 RBIs in 252 plate appearances this season.
