0 20

The New York Mets looked to try and finish their series strong against the Chicago Cubs and they did just that. New York powered their way to a 5-2 victory, improving their June record to 13-6. The best mark in the majors.

The Mets’ bats came out strong, starting right at the beginning. With a 3-2 count and one out in the first inning, Francisco Lindor hit his 13th home run of the season, a line drive to left-center field, driving in Harrison Bader. In the next inning, with a 2-2 count and one out, Brandon Nimmo hit his 11th home run of the season, a fly ball to left center field, increasing the Mets’ lead to 3-0.

Later, with a 2-1 count and one out, Mark Vientos hit his seventh home run, a fly ball to center field, extending the Mets’ lead to 5-2. Vientos’ homer exited at 109.3 mph and traveled 451 feet. Elsewhere, Harrison Bader and D.J. Stewart contributed with two hits.

Luis Severino was fantastic on the mound for New York, throwing 102 pitches and striking out ten. He did not allow a run and held Chicago to only three hits.

Behind Severino, the Mets’ bullpen allowed two runs. The damage came via a Christopher Morel two-run home run off Dedniel Núñez. In the ninth inning, Drew Smith and Jake Diekman had to get the job done as Edwin Díaz was ejected after a sticky substance check before throwing a pitch.

With the victory, the best team in the majors during June improved to 37-39 on the season. The Mets are 1.0 game back of the last wild card spot. They have gone seven-straight series without dropping one.
